It’s been about two months since I’ve had a depressive episode that lasted more than five days.
But last weekend I had an out of the blue 48 hour decompensation. When you observe your mood patterns closely (which I do), a preview of coming events emerges. This preview provides insight into whether it may be time to change up your treatment team, medications, or general environment. Or all of the above.
That’s your agency. And agency is the antidote to major depression. Even if you’re considering something as scary as ECT, the act of consideration is a healing thing.
Hypothetical example: you tell a non-depressed person that you’re thinking of checking yourself into a hospital. That person’s reaction could be one of total terror. But for you the feeling is one of comfort. Your internal dialogue is like ‘hey, I have options..’. Oh how sweet it is to still have options!
I encourage anyone who’s experiencing episodes lasting more than 7-10 days to get into a space of contemplation. This isn’t your destiny. Push back. With any tiny bit of strength you can muster.
Remember that one word: OPTIONS.
